new music saturdays.
October 15th, 2008
For the last several weeks I’ve been wanting to start a new weekly ritual where I post a new song I’m working on, or a new completed project, and call it “New Music Saturdays”. I’ve recently been working on a new 4 song EP that I’m calling “All Waiting Is Slow” and I was hoping to post it up last Saturday but never got around to it, so I’m posting it today instead. This is my first completed project since finishing my Master’s Degree and I’m really, really excited about the results.
01 All Waiting Is Slow - This is the first new musical step I’ve taken since leaving Flagstaff and Grad School. It’s been a lot of fun integrating the things I learned in Grad School into something that is not related to academia.
02 Anymore - This is a completely new arrangement, arguably a totally new and different version of an older song.
03 Breathing Again - Almost the same as when I finished it in 2006 before going back to school. I had done some new work on it a while back, and had stashed it away for a bit.
04 to You with love - Completely new mix and new edit. Added some effects and contouring to help smooth out the mix.
I’m very, very happy with the results. It could always and forever be better, and I still find myself being incredibly critical of everything, but I’m very pleased with the sound right now. I suppose Grad School does that to you, brings out your most critical and most skeptical side.
Right now I really wish I had a best friend, or just a friend that was in A&R at a record label, one who liked these songs and wanted to make an album. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know, right??
You can have a listen to the songs here.

this is hilarious!!
Reckoning.
October 3rd, 2008
as my enjoyment of all things radiohead and in rainbows continues, i today found thom’s post of the new reckoner video. it was submitted for the contest on aniboom. it’s quite well timed out to fit with the song. lots of nice cuts and fades that go nicely with what’s happening with the music. i’m growing very tired of the stock video window à la youtube, myspace, pretty much anywhere there’s video content online nowadays. but here it is for you viewing pleasure, or not.
The Dark Knight.
July 18th, 2008

i just got back from a midnight screening of the dark knight. WOW!
after one viewing i can say emphatically that:
-it is just as good as i remember thinking batman begins was after i saw it for the first time.
-christian bale has really settled into the role. he is bringing out the struggle and conflict that i have always identified with in batman, yet he is doing it naturally, organically even. he’s not in a hurry to get anywhere and it’s definitely working for him.
-chris nolan might now be my favorite movie director.
-heath ledger is very, very good. he is a much better actor in this movie than he was in 10 things i hate about you.
-the soundtrack was really stinking good. a lot of the techniques the composer used, i could have brought into my master’s level composition lessons and gotten praise. top-class stuff in several instances.
-i need to sleep and then see it again (at an imax theater) and then really write what i think.
what a fun night! too bad i won’t be able to watch it with my 2-year old for probably another 10-12 years, at least.
house of cards.
July 14th, 2008
so i’ve kind of been in an all radiohead, all the time kind of mood for a while. it could be boredom, and it could be that ‘in rainbows’ is such an astounding album, or both. it’s such a beautiful collection of songs. incredibly inspiring to me. in 7 and a half months since i first heard the album, i haven’t grown tired of it, and i’ve listened to it probably over 200 times. the new single and video is a favorite track of mine, house of cards.
you can watch the new house of cards video here.
or here.
very strange looking. very weird….very weird, yet kind of cool in a way. very different than i had imagined when i first heard about it. strikes me as the kind of thing that grows on you over time.
here is a cool video about the making of the house of cards video.
